Getting Started: In 1988, I moved from Lexington, Kentucky to New York City, more to keep a friend of mine company than a strategic career move for myself. We shared a small apartment with friends in what was then a scary part of town (Chelsea), to make ends meet in an expensive town. Ironically, a friendship with a clothing designer drew me to his weekend home in Bucks County, PA where I designed and installed a garden… my first. While working, I met the food editor from Metropolitan Home magazine, sent on assignment to this beautiful property to scout the interior of his home for an upcoming article. Unexpectedly, she fell in love with my country garden by the pool too. It was featured on the June 1989 cover of this magazine. This garden, this meeting of once a stranger (now one of my best friends of 25 years and next door neighbor) introduced me to the magazine publishing world, as well as my work to thousands of garden enthusiasts.
Since then, my work and garden ideas have been featured in more than 200 lifestyle and garden stories in magazine favorites such as Better Homes & Gardens, Country Gardens, Country Living, Garden & Gun, Garden Design, Martha Stewart Living, Metropolitan Home, Oprah at Home, Southern Living, and Town & Country.
I believe interest in my work has grown given the variety of gardens I've designed. No two gardens of mine are the same given my objective that each be more a reflection of the owner rather than solely of my personal taste, repeated again and again. In addition, my ideas for the garden are doable, and applicable to most any type of garden space.
In this segment… GARDEN IDEAS… we will continue to provide easy access to these and future stories, although there is nothing like the real thing. We encourage you to buy these magazines from your favorite newsstand. I hope they encourage gardeners of all ages to implement lessons learned in their garden.
For easier reference, these stories are organized in nine different areas of garden interest, from container gardening, to landscape and rooftop gardening … from garden decoration and entertaining in your garden, to a collection of travel stories featuring the Rockcastle River Trading Company (est. 1955), my home and garden located on my family's property in Livingston, KY.
